Geraldine Farrar



OK, today we wrap up Opera week with this picture of Geraldine Farrar. She was a really big opera star in the early 1900's and she sometimes sang with Enrico Caruso. I include a clip of her singing below that you can listen to.




Now for all of you who suffered through Opera Week, I will treat you to Stephen Foster's "Camptown Races". Enjoy.

  1. Well, Camptown Races was the best opera I heard all week. You might have made an opera listener out of me after all.
    Before you get to excited about my comment, I know Camptown Races is not opera. Just try to inject a little more humor into the last day.

    It goes to show, if you Post something that stirs people, you will get comments, good or bad or even indifferent.

  2. I listened to a few seconds of Geraldine then clicked on Camp Town Races and low and behold, got a duet of both. It was surprisingly delightful! CJ

  10. Well, that wasn't too bad. I must say I enjoy the pictures that show more surroundings (city scapes, countrysides, etc), but Opera Week has been educational!

  11. I am probably the only person here who is sorry to see Opera Week come to an end. Mr. PJM, for somebody who doesn't like opera, you certainly picked some interesting photos and clips. I enjoyed them, especially yesterday's. I think it would be great to put on an opera at your place with the peacocks as a backdrop!

    The clip of the Camptown Races, one of my favorite songs, was a lot of fun. What about a Stephen Foster Week? He is a wonderful American composer. Or what about a Famous Racehorses and/or Jockeys Week? The grand finale of the horse racing year, the Breeders Cup, will be coming up in the near future.

  13. Although Bugs Bunny did a nice version of Camptown Races, my favorite rendition was in the film Blazing Saddles.

  14. In this particular case, the word Ethiopian is used to mean "Negro". (Jeremiah 12:23) Foster was trying to claim the song he wrote was actually a Negro tune. Look at the way he spells the words - gwine instead of going, etc.

    I have really enjoyed opera week, and thank you very much for showing us some singrs who have long passed into history.

  15. Interesting photo. The woman is lovely even though her nose is a bit on the large side, but that hat! It looks like a furry and feathered wastepaper basket!
    I like looking at photos of outrageous hats like at the recent Royal wedding. Some of them were a real scream.
